Prince, Pepé Willie, and the Cookhouse Five Sessions
by DJ EJ on Mar.16, 2011.
Back in December of 2010, I had the opportunity to conduct a phone interview with Pepé Willie, who called from his office at the Reo Deo Record Label in Minneapolis, Minnesota. A musician and producer from Brooklyn, New York, Pepé was instrumental in cultivating the Minneapolis music scene beginning in the mid-seventies. At that time, Prince was an up and coming teenage musician. Married to Prince’s cousin, Pepé taught Prince about the music industry and invited him to play guitar for the studio sessions of his band, 94 East. These sessions (the first ever recorded music by Prince), dubbed the Cookhouse Five, have recently been inducted in the library and archives of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
In a recent feature show on KXUA, I played excerpts from my interview with Pepé Willie, as well as music from 94 East, Prince, Little Anthony and the Imperials, and Morris Day and The Time. Download the complete broadcast here:
